EDEN PARK CROWDS

PREPARING TO ACCOMMODATE 40,000 PEOPLE MOTOR TRAFFIC CONTROL Preparations for the huge crowds which promise to attend the British ' Rugby matches have resulted in many ; changes at Eden Park, and during next few days, in order to complete the accommodation arrangements, the park will present a hive of activity, j It is estimated that: there will be accommodation for 40,000 to 42,000 people. The area of the slopes at the park is approximately 10,700 square yards and, allowing three persons to the • square yard, which is considered to be quite reasonable by the engineers in charge, more than 32,000 people will be able to watch tlie games from the sloped ground. There is accommodation for 5,000 school children inside j the picket fence, while the two per- j manent stands will hold another 2.000 ; people and about 500 standing in the front. At the western end of the ground, so well known as the “duckwalk.” a band of men was engaged this morning erecting a temporary stand which will have seating eapacit3 r for 1.400, while along this flank there will probably be room for another 1,000. GROUND CLEARED Many alterations have been made and it will now’ be possible for the : ground to be completely surrounded by people. The ground on which the old cricket scoreboard stood has been built up. while the area between tLe gate at the Dominion Road end of the ground and the eastern end of tl ° . main stand, has been cleared of rock and built up, making quite comfortable standing room. On both sides of tin* terraces the ground has now a gentle slope from the playing field. To facilitate the purchasing of tickets several additional pigeon holes have been provided in a wooden fence about 100 yards along the road from the main gates. CONTROL OF TRAFFIC The traffic authorities have not been idle and definite arrangements for the control of the motor traffic in the vicinity of Eden Park have been made Parking will be prohibited in Cricket Avenue, Raleigh Street and the portion of Sandringham Road which fronts the park. No through motor traffic will be allowed in either Raleigh Street or Walters Road, while Rossmay Avenue will be reserved for taxis and buses. In Walters Road. Marlborough j Street, Cromwell Road, Kowhai Street, j Emma Street and Bellwood Avenue, parking will be permitted, but all park* | ing must be at an angle of 50 degrees j to the kerb and as close in as possible. On the tram routes where parkj ing may be permitted, cars must be ! parallel to the kerb and motorists- are reminded that it is an offence to park across a gateway.

One main route to and from the city will be available. Cars from the city may proceed along Dominion Road, down Burnley Terrace, and return through Sandringham Road, or, alternatively, they may travel down Sandringham Road, through Burnley Terrace and return through Dominion Road. Private cars leaving the park and travelling to the city will proceed by way of Walters Road, turning to the left into Kowhai Street or Emma Street to reach Onslow Road. On reaching Dominion Road they will turn to the left and follow’ the* tramlines. Cars leaving lor the city by way of Bellwood Avenue will proceed straight up to Dominion Road and then turn to the left and go straight ahead. Cars leaving for Epsom and Mount Eden will travel straight up \\ alters Road and across Dominion Road, travelling up Valley Road, but cars leaving by Bellwood Avenue will turn to the right along Dominion Road and then travel by means of Grange Road or other roads on their left.
