“BETTER LATE...”

But Not in This Case THE LAST POST “Better late than never” may be a consoling aphorism, but it is certainly not an advisable one. This was forcibly illustrated when one frantic person. in an endeavour to catch the late mail service of the steamer Ulimaroa, at Queen’s Wharf yesterday, heaved his letters (rather too late) at the retreating boat and watched them, with horror-stricken eyes, fail into the swirling eddy. “What was it?” “Whose were they?* “How did it happen?”—a small, inquiring crowd collected rapidly. The precious letters, twisting and tossing in the foaming whirlpool, and the forlorn appearance of the unfortunate "poster,” provided an eloquent answer. Sympathy was immediately forthcoming, but fell upon heedless ears, for the recipient wa.s gazing hopelessly at the vanishing letters.
