BACON INDUSTRY AWARDS
APPLICATIONS TO ADD PARTIES Application •was made to the Arbitration Court yesterday by the Butchers’ to have the Nikau and Oakdale bacon factories added to the Butchers’ Award. A counterapplication by the employers asked for the striking out of the Auckland Meat Company, Messrs. F. Baster, R. and W. Hellaby, T. X. Mandeno and the Hydra Bacon Company from the award. Mr. W. E. Sill appeared for the union and Mr. S. E. Wright for the employers. The president, Mr. Justice Frazer, said the court could not entertain the application to strike out the parties to the award because it would involve an amendment to the award; and an amendment of that kind could made only with the consent of the union or on the court being satisfied that it had made an error. If the parties thought it would be easier and more workable to have a separate award for bacon factories, the court was quite prepared to make one. The application to add the two new parties was granted and the application to strike out was refused. An application to add Messrs. R. and W. Hellaby to the Freezing Workers’ Award was supported by Mr. Sill, who contended that once a company entered into the export business it should be bound by the Freezing Workers’ Award. Mr. Wright, on behalf of the firm, said its business was mainly supplying its own shops. The freezing was only a fractional part of the business. The court reserved its decision.
