WOOING OUR TRADE
CANADA NOT THROWING AWAY MARKETS PREMIER’S WARNING Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Tuesday. Referring to .the agitation against the New Zealand Treaty, the Prime Minister, Mr. \V. L. Mackenzie King, in ail election address, issued a warning that the Government was not going to abrogate a treaty to throw away a great Empire market. “Let us pause before we make dissension with a sister Dominion that may cost us a valuable market,” he said. “We are just on the threshold of trade with that country.” The situation had changed since the treaty was negotiated, when both Canada and New Zealand were butter exporters. Now Canadian exports of butter were practically nil. This was due to the fact that farmers were chiefly interested in grain production The treaty change was only requested with a view to revising it and partly to meet the demands of Canadian dairying interests. DAIRYING WATCHED In an earlier speech at Victoria, British Columbia, the Prime Minister referred to the growth of trade between Canada and New Zealand under the New Zealand trade treaty. Although the old treaty was to be terminated a new one would be negotiated which would not injure the dairy industry of Canada. “We are going to revive that treaty,” said Mr. King. “We are not going to lose or abolish it because of political discussion in this country.”
