Wellington Meeting Opens at Trentham
WINTER RACING EVENT HURDLES TO MOUNTAIN GUIDE THE SUN’S Special Representative. TRENTHAM, Today. The Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting opened today in brilliant weather before a good attendance. The track was holding. Results: VITTORJA HURDLE HANDICAP Of £270; 1| miles. 1 —MOUNTAIN GUIDE, 9.8 1 5 PARIS, 0.5 2 4 DAYLIGHT, 9.9 Scratched: The Masher. Won by two lengths, with 15 between second and third. Time, 3.26. Mountain Guide was a most liberal priced favourite for « the Vittoria Hurdles, but there was also backing for Avro and Zippor. At the first hurdle Avro dropped his rider, and Mountain Guide, Daylight and Zippor raced through the straight on terms, well clear of Paris, who jumped badlv at the third obstacle. Down the back Mountain Guide, Zippor and Daylight were at length intervals, with Paris closing up. Zippor fell at the five furlongs, and interfered with both Daylight and Paris, the favourite being left well clear. Over the last fence Paris challenged tho Aucklander, but the latter won with something in hand by two lengths, with Daylight fifteen lengths away. WOBURN HANDICAP Of £260; 6 furlongs. 6 -COON SONG. 9.0 1 7 PORTRAY, 9.3 2 2—HUNTING CALL, 9.5 3 Scratched: Merry Melody. Won by two and a-half lengths, with one and a-half between second and third. Time, 1.161. Desert Song and Hunting Call were heavily backed in the Woburn Handicap. but fourth and third was the best they could do. Coon Song, on the rails, was first away and entering the course proper was clear of Abbey Portray, Gowan Lea and Blue Paper. In the. run to the post Coon Song held on to win by two and a-half lengths from Portray, with daylight back to Hunting Call and Desert Song, who were separated by a head. Then followed Tahoma, Gowan Lea and Great Lady. MAT A! HACK STEEPLECHASE Of £275; 2\ miles. 8— HYMESTRASON, 9.0 1 2—SIR MOMENT, 9.8 2 I—WAIT AUNAH A, 10.4 3 Scr.: Son o’ Mine. Won by five lengths, with one length between second and third. Time, &.23-J. Wyeford made a hot pace in the Matai Hack Steeplechase, but was done with at the end -of the first round. Hymestrason then took command from Wyeford, Corneroff, High Heather, Waitaunaha, Taramoa and Diamond Jack, the field being rather strung out. Hymestrason had six lengths’ lead over Waitaunaha crossing the top, with Sir Moment and Taramoa at intervals. Prior to this Red Bank had pulled up and Corneroff, High Heather and Wyeford lost their riders. Hymestrason had little difficulty in winning I by six lengths from Sir Moment, who cut Waitaunaha out of second money by half a length. Taramoa and Dia- ! mond Jack, the only others to finish, I were a long way back. The winner | paid nearly double figures. | Jockey Injured | A. MOTOR-CAR REMOVED
TWO YOUTHS ARRESTED From Our Own Correspondent CAMBRIDGE, Monday. On Saturday night a five-seater car owned by Mr. James Scott, of Kaipaki, was stolen from the Town Hall. The police were immediately notified, and on Sunday morning two young men Sidney Goodall and John Featherstone of Cambridge, were arrested. The car was found abandoned in Hamilton East. Accused appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., this afternoon, when on the application of the police a remand was granted.
