FOULING SPARK PLUG
VARIOUS CAUSES When a car-owner finds a spark plug persistently fouling in one cylinder of his motor, his first Inclination is tc replace it with a new one, but the chances are he would be wrong to do so. The cause of this kind of trouble generally lies elsewhere than in the spark plug. A motorist who finds a spark plug fouling should first examine the cylinder in which it occurs. The cylinder itself may be out of round, or the piston rings may he worn to the point where a sloppy piston is the result. Sluggish and improperly seating valves should be ground. Burned or corroded distributor points often impair the flow of current to the spark plug. The particular brush contacts in the distributor head should be wiped out thoroughly clean. Ignition cables are subject to deterioration through the attacks of heat, water and oil. The insulation becomes cracked current escapes, to the detriment of the spark at the Spark plug gaps. Occasional inspection and replacement when necesary will ensure full capacity spark and complete combustion. -
SPRING SHACKLES SELF-ADJUSTING TYPE Motor-cars bought in a hundred different countries this year will incorporate a device invented by Rupert L. Rand, of Amliurst, Nova Scotia, that contributes definitely to troublefree motoring. The invention, which has been bought by General Motors and is regular equipment on all its cars, is a self-adjusting spring shackle The new self-adjusting spring shackle eliminates the bushings for merly used. A bolt passing through the centre of the shackle is provided with a heavy plate spring, which automatically takes up any play produced by wear. The result is a self-adjusting, noiseless spring shackle. Alemite fittings leading into the oil reservoir make frequent lubrication unnecessary.
