GLARING HEADLIGHTS
THE ACCIDENT ROLL
With the long winter evenings, when night driving increases, motorists should be more certain than ever that headlights on the car are adjusted to avoid glare and comply with the law (remarks a Californian paper). The public safety department of the Californian State Automobile Association reports that a nation-wide survey shows that improperly adjusted headlights cause no less than 5 per cent, of the nation’s fatalities from motor vehicle accidents. “Although scientific research is being drawn upon in an effort to solve the problem of glaring and blinding headlights,” says the motorists’ organisation, “until this is finally accomplished motorists can do much to promote safety.
“One of the principal things is to see that the lights are properly focused. This can be done by periodic visits to testing stations. Experts are usually in charge of these tests, and can render valuable assistance to the car owner.”
Surveys have revealed that a large number of motorists avoid night driving due to the danger of blinding headlights. ‘This situation,” continues the Automobile Asosciatiou statement, “naturally adds to the congestion on the highways during daylight hours. It means that motorists endeavour to make a city before dark and at au hour when there is peak traffic.”
