TO STUDY ABROAD
AUCKLAND ARTIST PLANS TOUR Planning to study art in Australia, England and oti the Continent, Mr. Pat Redwood, a master of the Elam School of Art, leaves Auckland next week on a comprehensive tour. The Aucklander has no definite plans. After visiting Australia he will travel to England, where he will probably attend one of the art schools for a few months. Both at Home and in the Continental countries Mr. Redwood hopes to see more of the moderns, in which he thinks that, apart from some very extravagant work, there is a good deal of merit. The tourist is also anxious to see what the Russians are doing and to improve his knowledge of old masters. Mr. Redwood studied art at Elam some nine years ago, and later he took up commercial art here. For five years he studied at the National Gallery in Melbourne, gaining the second prize in a travelling scholarship which, for the past 27 years, has been won by women students. Unfortunately the second prize did not entail any travelling. In concluding his studies at the Gallery, Mr. Redwood did some mural work in Melbourne, and carried out some designing of stained-glass windows. Returning to New Zealand at the beginning of 1929, Mr. Redwood took up his present position on the teaching staff at Elam School.
