ILLEGAL GOLF CLUBS
In America a vogue has sprung up j for a new kind of shaft for golf clubs. ! It is an alliance of split bamboo cane ! and hickory strips fastened together, j and it is claimed that a perfect shaft, ! combining spring and tension in the j right degree, is thereby procured. George Voigt, of New York, one of the United States Walker Cup team, j and a newcomer to this country, brought with him a set of clubs fitted with this latest type of shaft, but before using them he submitted the clubs to the Rules of Golf Committee of St. Andrew’s. Voight has been informed by the authorities that the shafts do not conform to the regulations dealing with the make and form of clubs, and therefore are illegal. A shaft must be all steel, or all wood of one piece and of the same texture. I have tried one of the new shafts and the effect is most pleasing, says an English critic. However, I have no hesitation in saying that St. Andrew’s is right in barring them.
