PAYMENT OF STIPENDS

DISCUSSION BY SYNOD PROBLEM OF PUNCTUALITY Press Association AVELLINGTON, Wednesday. Tho problem of how the stipends of the clergy might be paid punctually occupied the attention of the AA'ellington Diocesan Synod yesterday. The subject was introduced by Mr. J. AV. Henderson, who moved that the following motion, passed last year, should bo rescinded: “That the standing committee bo instructed to hold in reserve in the general church fund a sum by means of which the stipends of th© clergy can be paid punctually.” In tho general discussion which followed, Mr. H. Shirtcliffe said the only way in which this could be done was to set a side a certain sum as a special fund. But even if this were done it would be almost certain that the fund would be exhausted within a few years.

It was pointed out that the stipends of the clergy had been paid as punctually as was possible in the past and that this policy would continue, but it was unreasonable to expect the general fund to accomplish the impossible.

Th© Rev. N. S. Barnett said clergymen arriving in the Dominion from England had complained that it was extremely difficult for them to carry on when their stipends were some months overdue. Th© motion to rescind the 1929 resolution was carried.
