Programme Drafted For Relief Fixture

ATTRACTIVE CARD

With commendable foresight, the management of the Auckland Trotting Club has early arranged an attractive card for the proposed relief meeting. The decision to stage the carnival will not be definitely arrived at until the position with regard to the conditions imposed by the Government is more clearly defined. The committee of the club fully discussed the proposal to hold a i fixture for the unemployment relief fund at a meeting yesterday afternoon. It was decided, in the event of satisfactory arrangements being made with the Government to hold the carnival on August 30 and September 1. The club’s delegates to the Troti ting Conference at Wellington next j week were deputed to investigate i the position, and if the result is | satisfactory, the fixture will be j proceded with. Prize money to the I value of £2,090 was allotted for ! each day’s racing. Hard on the Clubs The Forbury Park Trotting Club advised that when it had practically completed the arrangements for its recent unemployment relief meeting, the Govermment made certain alterations 111 tho conditions which were not satisfactory to the clnb, and it is desired guard against this in the case of the ; Auckland fixture. Under the (lovern- ! indent’s conditions, if there was a loss ! on the meeting owing to bad weather ! or other causes, the club would have vo j stand the Joss out of its own pocket, and no portion of the taxes to lie remitted could be used as a set-off. i If the Government holds the club j hard and fast to such a severe measure, I no one will cavil at a later decision oy j the management to forego the meeting. When clubs are prepared to run fixtures for charitable purposes, entailing a lot of strenuous work, they should have some protection in the event of unforseen circumstances militating against a successful function. Apart from the motive of assisting a deserving cause, the Auckland Club is studying the interests of owners and I trainers l»v staging an early season tixlure. The racing experienced at the period decided upon for the special function will prove decidedly beneficial for the contestants who will be taking part in the Waikato, Wliangarei and Auckland .October carnivals. It is *0 j be hoped in the interest of all con- ! corned that the Auckland delegates will be successful in their overtures to the Government for a satisfactory understanding. In the event of the carnival being held, and climatic condii tions are favourable, the relief fund j should benelit to a considerable exI tent.
