TEN HORSES KILLED THE SEASON’S TALLY Every jumping season in Melbourne many horses meet their deaths before the Grand Nationals and the Australian Steeplechase and Hurdle a.re decided, writes a. Melbourne correspondent under date June 25. So far this season 10 horses have been killed. Maori, who was killed today, is the latest casualty. At Caulfield last Saturday he was well backed for the Wanda Steeple. Ridden by Berwick at Flemington this morning, Maori hit the third obstacle heavily and broke his neck. On the same course a filly by Argyle collided .with a fence and had to be destroyed. Riders Berwick, E. Troke and Yates were injured in this morning's mishaps. Air. H. IT. Dean paid 365 guineas for Maori. As was expected, Swahilli, .after his wonderful win at Caulfield last Saturday. has jumped to the head of discussions for the Grand National Hurdle to be run on July 5. Reviser, who fell at. the second of the railway treble at Caulfield on Saturday, received severe injuries to his chest. He may not meet his engagements in the G.N. Steeple. West Wing, who hit the same fence but won the race, injured his stifle. He will probably start in the G.N. Steeple.
