CAUSE OF MOST TROUBLE

IGNITION AND CARB. FAULTS

Ignition trouble is still the biggest cause of breakdowns on the road. A monthly return covering the operations of the Sydney N.R.M.A. emergency road service reveals that, of the 1,262 cases attended to, 233 related to trouble caused by the ignition system on cars. . Carburettor defects accounted for 108 cases, and in 72 cases, the battery was at fault. Other sources of trouble were: Vacuum tank, 84 cases; self-starter, 60; rear axles, 42; and steering, 27. Eighty-seven visiting country members were piloted through the heavy traffic zones, but in 42 causes in which service' was asked for the cars could not be located when the patrols arrived on the scene. The National Roads and Motors' ] Association emphasises that its-road! patrols have been definitely instructed to refuse to answer calls by members ! to attend to their cars in their own garages. The service provided by the association does not provide for this, otherwise the N.R.M.A. would require a staff several times larger than is now possible with the existing low membership fee. In any case it is considered that service in the home garage is the function of the legitimate service station.
