The Care of the Car

OILING THE BEARINGS In order that the lubricant may be j evenly distributed around Ihe bearings, it is. recommended when greasing steering pivots, that the front wheels should be jacked up clear of the ground. If the lubrication is done with tlie wheel supporting the weight, the steering pivot must be exerting considerable pressure on its bush, so that the grease cannot easily find its way bet ween them. Moreover, when the wheels are clear of the ground they may be locked over from side to side in order to distribute the grease evenly around the bearings. RADIATOR CLEANING Water will not circulate properly in the cooling system if the pump is not in good working order or a pipe has become clogged. Unscrew the fillercap and see if the water swirls about just under the opening when the engine is running. Water will not cool properly if there is lime scale on the radiator walls or the fan belt slips To remove the lime scale drain the radiator, then pour in a bucket of watef in which a large handful of soda has been dissolved and fill up the radiator. Now run the engine for about 15 minutes and again drain. Then wash the soda out by filling and refilling with fresh water a number of times.
