UNEMPLOYED RELIEF

ONEHUNGA PROPOSALS In a report submitted to the Onehunga Borough Council by its foreman of works, last evening, a suggestion was made that the permanent bands should each be paid off for a foitnight in rotation, and their places filled by unemployed residents. Also that the Government be asked to sub®i dls L e ° n f £2 fol ' basis the sum ol £ 000 to provide work for unemployed men on Hill Street. Cr. F. W. Mountjoy contended that it was wrong to put off their permanent hands. “If that principle,” he said, "were applied generally, it would disorganise the economic conditions of the whole Dominion.” Crs. S. Vella and J. Pilkington also opposed any interference with the permanent staff, many of whom, they said had rendered faithful and efficient service and would probably seek other employment, to the council’s loss. The Mayor held that it was the council’s duty to afford relief and at the same time effect improvements on the borough’s roads. He supported the proposal of a Government subsidy for reforming Hill Street, a work which involved a maximum of labour with a minimum of material. Jt was ultimately agreed to refer the foreman’s suggestions to the Streets Committee for a full report, to be submitted to the next meeting of the council.
