WILHELM BACKHAUS
FIRST RECITAL THURSDAY
The visit of "Wilhelm Backhaus. the | world-famous pianist, to New Zealand j will be welcomed by music lovers and i ])atrons of art in general. The distinguished musician has a large following wherever he has appeared, and his popularity in the Dominion is as great as in any other country he has appeared. In Australia, where Mr. Backhaus has been recently playing, he has attracted large audiences, and the highest praise has been accorded him by the Press. His dignity, intellectual depth, and diversity of outlook, as well as his superb repose, even in the midst of prodigious technical difficulties, never fails to capture his hearers. As a Beethoven player he is regarded as being without equal today, and that he is equally famous for his interpretations of the works of Chopin. Brahms, Schubert and Schumann, and other classical composers, is a tribute to his remarkable versatility. For the programme for his Auckland concerts, which take place on Thursday, Saturday and Monday next, in the Town Hall, the popular artist has been careful to draw on famous works which wero not included in the programmes of the recitals given here on his first visit, except in the case of some extremely popular works which have bepn asked for by admirers. E. J. Craves took, Ltd., announce that the box plans for the three recitals are available, and that the demand for tickets is already very big.
