LEISURE FOR WORKERS
CONFERENCE APPROVES PLAN FOR PAID HOLIDAY MINERS’ DAY REJECTED * GENEVA, Saturday. The International Labour Conference by a final vote rejected the draft convention for hours in coal mines, w hich had been fixed at 73 hours, bank to bank. New Zealand had opposed it. The resolution was actually carried by 70 votes to 40, but it was necessary to have a two-thirds majority, which was lacking by three votes, j The German Government delegates proposed replacing- the subject on the agenda for the meeting in 1933. Thereupon Mr. E. Shinwell (Britain) asserted that the responsibility for the failure to adopt the convention rested entirely with the German Government’s representatives, who had abstained from voting today after giving a favourable vote on Thursday. The conference passed a resolution, by 84 votes to 21, in favour of an annual paid holiday for workers.
