EXPENSIVE MISTAKE
HEN PHEASANTS SHOT Special to THE SUN WHANGAREI, Thursday. Shooting two hen pheasants and three quail -without authority and failing to produce his licence cost A. Beardsell a total of £ll Is in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr. J. F. Briggs, -who prosecuted, said a ranger accosted defendant, who admitted that he had no licence. It was a common practice at the end of the season to shoot hen pheasants, and the greatest difficulty was experienced in securing convictions. Defendant said he shot the birds by mistake. The day was very stormy. He did not see how a person could tell the difference in the birds. The magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, said it was a most unsportsmanlike thing to do and it was no use talking about mistakes. “It is a bad case,” he added.
Defendant was fined £7 10s, with costs £ 1 Is on the first charge, and £2, with costs 10s, on the second count.
