MINES MAY CLOSE

WORKERS MUST FACE RIG WAGE REDUCTIONS TENSION AT BROKEN HILL SYDNEY, Wednesday. Owing to the heavy decline in the prices of base metals three of the chief mines at Broken Hill, namely, the Sulphide Corporation’s property, the Broken Hill Proprietary’s mine and Block 14, are to be closed down unless the employees agree to a 171 per cent, reduction in their wages.

The Miners’ Union met the owners today in conference and now is considering the position. Another mine—the British —is to be closed down on Saturday.
