EMBARGO ON ASIATICS SOUGHT MARRIAGES WITH MAORIS From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOIIE, Wednesday. The decision to approach the Prime Minister suggesting that the intermarrying of Asiatics .and Maoris be prohibited, with the view of conserving the native race was reached at a meeting of the White New Zealand League held at Pukekohe this week. It was stated during a discussion that the Government had a duty to protect the Maori race under the Treaty of Waitangi. The league agreed to urge that a permanent embargo be placed on the admission of all Asiatics into the Dominion. The secretary, Mr. G. T. Parvin, was appointed to meet officers o£ the Wellington branch and businessmen to form a deputation to the Primo Minister and the Minister of Native Affairs. It was reported that nothing further had been heard of the finding of the commission appointed to take evidence and to report on the relationship existing between Maoris and Asiatics. It was decided to approach the Prime Minister on the subject. Reports were received that there were cases of local Maoris in indigent circumstances, the fathers having died leaving wives and children. As marriage and birth certificates could not be produced the widows were ineligible for widows’ pensions. The league agreed to make representations on this subject also.
