CHELTENHAM BUSES

QUESTION OF ROUTE The question of varying the route of the Cheltenham buses at Devonport from Oxford Terrace to Tainui Road is causing the Devonport JBorougli Council some worry. In framing 'the estimates for the year the borough engineer reported that Oxford Terrace would require repairs costing £2BO. The. council thereupon decided to make the buses use Tainui Road route, one block distant, which was concreted at a cost of £3,000 six years ago and has since been almost idle. Oxford Terrace residents opposed the borough’s application before the No. 2 Licensing Authority, which remitted the issue to the Devonport Borough Council again. On Wednesday last the council in committee heard a deputation from Oxford Terrace residents, for whom Mr. A. Glover and Mr. J. C. Webster spoke. The committee last evening recommended the council to ask the Omnibus Licensing Authority again to vary the route, but Mr. F. J. H. Ellisdon and Mr. F. T. Eyre moved that the recommendation be recommitted for further consideration. A statement by Mr. Eyre that seven of the councillors had no interest in Cheltenham drew strong protests from Messrs. Campbell and Falla. The motion was voted down and therefore the No. 2 Licensing Authority will have to decide the question.
