BACKHAUS RECITALS
THREE FOR AUCKLAND The forthcoming - Backhaus season, which will open at the Town Hall on Thursday, July 3, should be a veritable inspiration to the musical public of Auckland, for Backhaus is, now at the very height of his fame, and it recognised throughout the world as the most intellectual pianist of his generation. Two very fine programmes arc already announced, and special interest attaches to the first recital from the fact that two Beethoven sonatas —E flat Major* Op. 81, and E flat Major, Op 31—will be included among tlie numbers. Backhaus is world-famous as the greatest living interpreter of Beethoven, and therefore his execution oi the great composer's works are the very last words in authority* - . Other numbers on the first programme are the Italian Concerto (Bach), eight Chopir compositions, Liszt’s “Liebestraum” anc Second Hungarian Rhapsody*, and the Backhaus transcription of the melodious Serenade from “Don Juan.”
Concerts will also be given on Satur day. July r 5, and Monday, July 7, anthe box plans for the season will ope next Monday morning.
