VICTORY FOR N.Z.

ANDREWS AND MALFROY AT WIMBLEDON TENNIS IN HEAVY WIND L nited J'. A . —Ey Telegraph Copyright Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Monday. In the first round of the tennis singles at Wimbledon. Andrews (New Zealand) (beat Willard (Australia), Allison (America) beat Moon (Australia), G —l, G —l. C—3. Crawford and Hopman. the Australians. had easy victories. Mai fro y (New Zealand) beat Gaslini (Italy), G—6—l. G—l. Coc-liet (France) bear Timmer t Holland). G—4. !) —11, 4 —G. G—i, 6 2. Other winners included Tildes, Brugnon, and Austin. Twenty-three nations are competing in the tournament. Willard, who was unable to handle the shots in a strong baffling wind, exploited a fine variety of strokes, but wanted a little more luck. He made many excellent returns short, and his volleys, looking like winners, found the net by the merest fraction. However hard Willard drove, the cross wind took off the pace. Nevertheless, Andrews, with a greater know ledge of the conditions, undoubtedly played magnificently, notably bringing off side-line cross court winners. Willard put up a great fight in th° second set. until the New Zealander evened with five-all.

Malfroy surprisingly defeated Gas lini. who, however, is a better doubles player.
