PIANO STUDENTS
LECTURE ON MODERN MUSIC
A very enjoyable meeting: was held by the Auckland Piano Students’ Association last evening in the Lewis Lady Buildings. The life and works of Cyril Scott formed the subject of a most interesting lecture given by Mr. Tracy Moresby, who has made a special study of modern music. He dealt in turn with the compositions for the piano, classifying them into three sections — “pretty” pieces, “ impressionistic” pieces and pieces based on folk songs, and the compositions for orchestra and stringed instruments which have a distinct vogue on the Continent, although practically unknown here. Mr. Moresby played nine varied examples of Cyril Scott’s works, few of which have been heard here before. These included “Over the Prairie,” “Lotus Land,” Diatonic Study, Viennese Waltz, a Chinese Serenade and a clever arrangement of a 10th century folk song In the latter part of the evening a paper on the life and works of Schumann was read by Miss Doris Binns and pianoforte items of the composer were played b\’ Misses V. Silver, M. Hewson and D. Binns. A short paper on the “variation” form was read by Miss K. Judge and illustrated by Miss M, Clare.
