CHRISTIANS PROTEST

LOTTERIES AND RACING MEETING OF CONGREGATIONS Two resolutions of protest were passed by the Council of Christian Congregations at its quarterly meeting last evening concerning the reintroduction of lotteries and the permit for a charity race meeting. The Rev. E. Drake presided over the meeting. The resolutions arc to be sent to the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Prime Minister; the Minister of Internal Affairs; and the Minister of Justice. The first letter, presented by the Rev. Dr. North, reads as follows: “Tho council views with the utmost concern the actions of the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle in relation to gambling matters. (1) He has renewed the lottery system without any mandate to do so, in spite of the evidence of prodigality and abuse which caused the Coates Government to suppress it. This system is directly opposed to the interests of a nation encountering grave financial stringency. (2) He has granted special racing permits to raise money for the relief of unemployment. Inasmuch as special race meetings are. a grievous wrong to the business community, and are the most extravagant method of raising money, and inasmuch as they mingle charity with a recognised vice, this council is of opinion that the Minister has rendered a distinct disservice to his country.”

The second resolution, moved by Mr. C. H. Furness, regarding a charity race meeting for which a permit lias been issued, reads:

“This council recognises the gravity of unemployment, and sympathises with the difficulties of the Hospital Board, and wishes to co-operate in ©very way possible with sound methods that are calculated not to intensify the problem. Since it is generally recognised that unemployment is due to business depression, the council suggests that the proposal for two days’ racing, which interferes with business and diverts money into unproductive channels, is unsound. The council therefore regrets that the Hospital Board and the City Council should be involved in such a proposal.”
