MANUKAU RUGBY

The Manukau Rugby Sub-Union competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday, when Papakura Seniors were defeated by Clevedon Seniors 23 to 3, at Clevedon. None of the players handled with any degree of certainty owing to the greasy state of the ball. The forwards were very evenly matched in the loose, but Clevedon had a decided advantage in the line-outs and scrums. The home backs were much superior to the visitors, Spragg was easily the best back on the ground He scored several tries. For Papakura McGuire and Quigley were easily the best, the latter being particularly sound at tackling. R. Clarke was sound on defence. F. Scott was the pick of the visitors’ forwards. Drury defeated Whitford at Whitford by 43 to 3. The Papakura Juniors scored their first win of the season when they defeated Clevedon Juniors at Papakura 3—o. DARGAVILLE In an interesting contest at Rugby Park, Dargaville, on Saturday, Dargaville Seniors won from Northern Star by 14 points to 6. Good forward play predominated for most of the game and 'the winners showed up in some spectacular forward passing rushes. F. | Griffiths notched the first try for Dargaville in such dashing sty]© that he earned the plaudits of all present. From a free kick awarded his side near the twenty-five flag, Griffiths followed up to outwit the opposition and score right under the goal-posts. Izzard converted. Moorhead, another forward, added two tries through clever play, and Hilliam scored the remaining try for the victors. In the backs Hargreaves, Izzard and R. Jones played sound games. The forwards, as a whole, pla?,*ed well, although Griffiths, Moorhead, Wells and Hilliam showed out in some good individual efforts. For Star, Archie Ross played a safe game at fullback. “Sonny” Williams (half) and Bob Wilson showed to advantage among the remaining backs. R. Taylor and H. Anderson were noticed among others who made good efforts in the forwards. The attendance of spectators was far below the average, due to the fact of football “fans” “listening in” to the wireless broadcast of the first test at Dunedin at all available places in the district. Other senior matches played in the district resulted:—United defeated Tangowahine 17 to nil and Public Works Department won from Southern by 6 to nil.
