SETTLING DEBT WITH TAXI-DRIVER TOUR OF NEW LYNN “There are only two of us, so I’ll have it out with you,” suggested James McGregor to a taxi-driver, after running up a bill of 15s for. trips round New Lynn. McGregor was drunk at the time so the driver took him to the police station. McGregor, a farm manager, aged 45, pleaded guilty at the Police Court this morning to being found drunk in the Great North Road. Ho was also charged with obtaining credit by fraud by incurring a debt of 15s for taxi hire. “I have the money to pay for th« taxi,” said accused. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said the taxi-driver had picked up accused in Ivliyber Pass. McGregor had asked to be driven to New Lynn. Then he told the driver to take him somewhere else. After a time the driver had become suspicious and brought up the question of payment. McGregor had refused to pay and offered to fight the driver for the amount. McGregor said he had a Post Office Savings Bank account and Mr. F. Tv. Hunt, S.M., suggested that a constable accompany accused to the bank where he could draw the money to pay his fine and the. hire of the taxi. McGregor was fined ss, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment for drunkenness On the fraud charge he was ordered to pay expenses, in default three days’ imprisonment.
