TAKAPUNA EX-SERVICEMEN

Mr. Bryce Hart occupied the chair at the annual smoke concert of the Takapuna Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Saturday evening, more than 150 guests being present. The hall and tables were decorated with red, white and blue streamers. Tlio chairman referred to the good work that the club had done in promoting the material interests of exservicemen in the district. Since its inception three years ago, much had been done in the direction of supplying the every day needs and requirements of those men who had answered the call of King and Country in the period of the Great War. It was the endeavour of the club to see that no exservice man should be cast into the ranks of the unemployed. In this connection he asked for support for the street collection to be made on July 12. Responses to the toast of “The Combined Forces” were made by Messrs. Hewson (Royal Navy), J. Crichton, V.C. (N.Z.E.F.), and C. R. Pettit (United States Army). The toast was proposed by Captain Sharpe, secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The chairman, who is a member of the Takapuna Borough Council, responded to the toast proposed in its honour by Mr. Frank Hawes. - Mr. Fred Bartley’s orchestra contributed some orchestral selections, supporting numbers being given by Messrs. Dan Flood, F. McCallum, YV. Mellor, J. Lonergan, J. Calvert, Harold YVard and YV. Bailey.
