N.Z.-MADE GOODS
LECTURE AT WHAKATANE From Our Own Correspondent WHAKATANE, Today. An address on New Zealand-made goods, illustrated by lantern slides, was given here on Wednesday evening by Miss Ellen Melville. The Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, presided. Miss Melville spoke of_ the great necessity for the people of this country to foster their own industries, and in this way to alleviate unemployment. Goods were made in this country which reached the highest standard of workmanship, and yet many would not buy them because they had not some foreign brand on them. People in New Zealand were suffering from an “inferiority complex.” Lord and Lady Bledisloe had set a fine example by buying and wearing New Zealand-made clothing. Miss Melville appealed to the women, who were generally the buyers for the household, to ask for New Zealandmade goods in the shops, and to give them a fair trial before resorting to the foreign-made article. By so doing they would not only get better value for their money by avoiding in many cases high Customs duties, but they would enable the factories to produce the maximum output, and thus create more employment for the. workers. , A vote of thanks to Miss Melville was carried by acclamation.
