OPOTIKI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING
About 50 members attended the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Women’s Institute on Friday at the Farmers’ social rooms. Mrs. Main, vice-president, was in the chair. Three new members were proposed. A letter was read from Mrs. Wettenhall, V.P.0., with regard to forming an institute at Woodlands. Miss Ellen Melville notified her intention to lecture at Opotiki on “Mew Zealand-made Goods.” Miss McElwel invited all members to the group meeting to be held at Whakatane on June 24. The first item on the programme was a most interesting talk on Zululand by Mr. Alluxn, of Otara School. The roll-call was a quotation from Longfellow, and most members answered the call. Mrs. Stephenson then showed in a very able manner how puff pastry should be made. and a competition arranged by Mrs. Fox was won by Mrs. Forbes. A vocal duet, ‘ W liispering Hope,” by Mesdames Hambly and E. Young, was very much appreciated. During the evening a very beautiful autograph book, in which to keep a record of all members’ names. was presented to the institute by Mrs. A. Neilson. Good business was done at the sales table by Mrs. Cooper. The hostesses were Mesdames McAlister, Sydenham, Shove, and Misses Short and Ferguson. The singing of the National Anthem brought the evening to a, close. * * • WAIOTAHI BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Waiotahi Women’s Institute was held last week, and in spite of the inclement weather a good many of the members attended. In reply to a letter from Miss Ellen Melville, it was decided to fix a date for a lecture to be given by her in the interests of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association. A gardening roll-call resulted in many useful hints being given and several interesting items from papers were read. A gardening bring-and-buy stall dm good business, and members went home laden with vegetables and parcels of plants. DANCE PARTY AT MANGERE JOINT HOSTESSES ENTERTAIN AT ORIENTAL RENDEZVOUS A jolly party and dance was held at the. Oriental Rendezvous, Mangere, last Saturday evening. The hostesses were Mrs. J. Robertson, wearing a frock of pink sequined georgette, and Mrs. E. Mac Duff, in sunset taffeta and net. Among those present were: Miss F. Reid, \vho wore black and jade georgette; Mrs. Edward Golding, gold lame and red net; Mrs. Dyson, black chiffon velvet; Mrs. F. Stevens, pink tuU® and velvet: Mrs. McKilllp, black velvet and gold lace; Mrs. Shelly Atkinson black lace frock; Mrs. Colin Carr, anklelength frock of floral taffeta; Miss Robinson, apricot georgette. Miss Nelson, in sea green crepe de chine; Miss M. Forshaw, pink corded taffeta; Miss Mary Mathew, ivory georgette; Miss R. Wratten, pink georgette and silver lace; Miss Aloma Jerv.s cameo pink georgette; Mrs. A. Wilson, black floral georgette; Miss Hazel Martin, floral georgette; Miss A. Ibbotson, blue georgette; Miss E. Ibbotson, b'acl; georgette and gold lace; Mrs. Shaw, black satin and ninon; Miss Robinson, cherrv georgette; Miss A. Young, old rose taffeta frock; Miss Montgomery, peach shaded ninon. W.C.T.U. MEETING AT DEVONPORT The usual monthly meeting of the Devonport W.C.T.U. took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Congregational Church, Devonport. About six members offered their services for one day at the W.C.T.U. stall at the Winter Show. It was decided to place the “White Ribbon,” the union's official paper, in the Devonport Library. The address by Mrs. Millar was much appreciated by those present.
