CAUGHT BY WINCH ROPE

SHIP’S OFFICER INJURED Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A miraculous escape from death when he was caught in the rope of a winch, was the experience of Mr. A. Copland, chief officer of the steamer John, when the vessel was off Cape Egmont yesterday afternoon. Mr. Copland was pulled round twice before the steam could be shut off. His chest was crushed and his back and right leg were injured. The John put back to Wellington and the injured man, who lives at Christchurch, was taken to hospital. His condition is fairly serious.
