SUCCESSFUL BALL CONCLUDES QUEEN CARNIVAL AT WAIHI

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF AND TOWN IMPROVEMENTS

To lielp relieve unemployment, and also to improve the appearance of the town, a highly successful queen carnival has been held in Waihi. It was brought to a close last Thursday evening with a ball in the King’s Hall, at which it was announced that the tri angular contest had resulted in more than £ 600 being raised. IDetailed results are:—Miners' queen (Miss Mary Carter), £243 9s Id; farmers’ queen (Miss Pearl Owens), £239 16s lOd; licensed victuallers’ queen (Miss Mary Weedon), £l3o—a total of £613 5s lid, in penny votes. To this will have to be added approximately £SO profit from the ball, while a further £25 or £3O is expected from the coronation ceremony, which will take place next Thursday. The Waihi Borough Council has given £IOO for unemployment relief. It is anticipated that something like £1,500 will be made available, with a Government subsidy. Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, who was present at the ball, congratulated the town on its splendid example in solving the local unemployment problem for some time to come.
