Timaru Prospects
South Canterbury Fixture Opening
B‘j ’-EARLY BIRD
The meetings to engage attention of racegoers this week are the South Canterbury fixture on Thursday and Saturday, and the Hawke’s Bay gathering on Friday and Saturday. For the opening tomorrow at its Washdvke (Timaru) course of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting, the acceptances are excellent in all events, with two-dividends likely in all eight races. The Otipua Steeplechase, the main jumping event, however, has attracted but six acceptors. Radiate is a fine ’chaser if he can be kept sound, and he should be all the better for his Wingatui outings. Xightraid, French Fleet and Double Soult may make it interesting for the top weight. Then there are Scion, winner in the one season of the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, and Valves. Good Hurdles Field The field in the opening event, the Te Kapo Hurdles, is a. classy one. and with good hurdlers sucii as Aberfeidy, Lancer, Pangolin, Antrim Boy. Oriflamb, Troilus, Zeuxis. G Uncase and Exide, it promises to be a most interesting affair. Probably tfie .first four mentioned will bo likely propositions. There are eight in the principal fiat race, the Teschemaker Handicap. 10 furlongs. Among them is the promoted hack, Ranelagh, who is on the minimum, so that he may make tho others go all the way. Taboo is in form again, and .Black Duke is well but lias been racing very unluckily. Camisader was a surprise winner last month, and Evening, Arch Arrow, Mount Boa and Royal Mint have lightweights’ prospects. The last-named animal is identical with the same horse
BLACK DUKE that was racing prominently in handicaps in the North Island a season or two ago. The issue appears to lie between Ranelagh, Black Duke, Taboo and Camisader. The Sprinters The form of Inevitable #.t YVangitui earlier in the month was outstanding, and with 10.3 this fellow will again have to be taken into consideration. Smithereens is nicely treated, and Rascal is reported as corning back into

FINAL TRIALS RADIATE’S PROSPECTS Special to THE SIN CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Few horses were worked fast at Riccarton this morning, but most of those wlio will be leaving for the South Canterbury meeting tomorrow ■were out on the track. The short No. 7 grass track was available, but 1 the going became very slippery after . a few gallops had been done. Radiate, who will be the only representative .of D. Campbell’s stable at Washdvke. was sent a mile and aquarter, but although the going was still firm with frost when he galloped, lie took 2.26 2-5 to accomplish his task, after running the first lialf-mile in SS. Jumping Will Tell Radiate will be ridden by A. E. Ellis in the Otipua Steeplechase on Thursday, and if he jumps better than at Dunedin, should go very near to winning. Battle Colours and Subdivision, who are not making the trip South, but are nominated for Wellington, sprinted five furlongs in 1.7 4-5, coming home the last three in 42 2-5. Gay Jim went six furlongs in 1.22 1-5, doing the final three furlongs in 42. Best of the Morning The best figures of the morning were returned by Giggleswick, who wound th© clock up tu 1.15 3-5 for six furlongs, doing, the last three in 39 3-5. I-Ie is not going to South Canterbury. Toawai was worked at only half pace and did not seem to appreciate the going. He will be at a disadvantage if it is heavy going at Washdvke. Desert Song was not hurried to do five furlongs in I.S. Limerick and Arikiwai were partners over three furlongs, and they wero not doing their best at the end to register 41. Limerick appears to be standing up to fast tests without any sign of leg trouble recurring, and his trials will probably be increased shortly. A Mudlark's Chance The conditions were all in Royal Mint’s favour, and he took advantage j of them to show the way to Troilus > and Haze at the end of six furlongs jin I.IS. On recent form Royal Mint could hardly be recommended for the ; Teschemaker Handicap at Washdvke, but if the mud is thick h© may- be found beating Taboo in his own special environment. First Sight was only allowed to go three furlongs, which he rattled Off in 41, but he would have liked to have gone farther. He has no engagements mapped out ahead for him yet except the trip to Australia, if Limerick remains sound. Gala Day was sent over a round of the country yesterday morning, but was not schooled this morning. Lancer jumped three of the schooling hurdles yesterday and gave a satisfactory exhibition, j On Thursday D. O’Connor will be on j Lancer, Gay Jim and Sweet Refrain: j A. J. Peart has been engaged for Gala | Day and Aberfeidy’: G. Salt will ride i Zeuxis and Garvary. and G. Humphreys has the mount on. Toawai.
i form. Arch. Arrow is also in th | longer race. First Raid has show ! signs of form again, and perhaps h
PANGOLIN will be h better fancy than those below | him. However, recent form says i most for Inevitable, First Raid and Rascal. There is a big crowd in th© Hack .Steeplechase Handicap, with the speedy Gala Day at the head. If he jumps well ho will be hard to head off. French Fleet, Tunamoe, Gay Jim, Bonatic, Gold Town. Barrington and Diamond Jack are a few that are likely to cause a surprise. Of the two hack flat races carded, Arrow maid, Bell bird, Cliarmetise, Desert. Bong, Miss Bradbury and Night Lark in the Electric Stakes, and Punchestown, Towai. Sweet Refrain, Fortalicc, Kentish Lady. Jock o’ Hazeldean, Tuku and Hounslow in the Rosewill Hack, furnish plenty of form for speculators to go upon. The following will be in demand for i their engagements tomorrow; iTe Kapo Hurdles— PANGOLIN ANTRIM BOY Smithfield Handicap— TABOO GLENROWAX | Otipua Steeplechase— RADIATE FRENCH FLEET, or NIGHT RAID Electric Stakes^-f-ARROWM AID DESERT SONG Teschemaker Handicap— RAN BLAGII BLACK DUKE i Steeplechase Handicap— GALA DAY FRENCH FLEET, or | GAY JIM !
