Strong Northern Team for Trentham
JUMPERS PREDOMINATE SEVEN IN BIG STEEPLES Auckland provincial stables arc strongly represented in the entries for the Wellington meeting on July 8. 10 and 12. Last year, for Auckland owners, Kind's Guard, Marble King, High Pitch, Mark Mint and Raddon won races at Trentham, capturing half a dozen races between them. Of these, Marble King, High Pitch and Paddon are again booked for Trentham. King’s Guard won the last Welling# ton Steeplechase, and next month the northern province will have seven jumpers after the same prize. They are Kawini, Mangani, Odin, Master Lu, Lucess, Pompeius and Young Thurnham. Back to Jumping It is very interesting to see Pompeius entered for the jumping contests. He figures in the Hack Hurdles and the Wellington Steeplechase on the first day, in the i-ligh-Weight the second day, and in both the Winter Hurdles and the July Steeplechase on the final day. It is a rather mixed programme, but it looks as if his owner was preparing for the Grand National Steeplechase, and any odd stake that might forthcoming in the interim. Of the oth£r Auckland horses engaged in the Wellington Steeplechase, Master Lu and Lucess won hack ’chasing events at Ellerslie recently; Odin was third in the Great .Northern ! Steeplechase and fell in the \\ inter Steeplechase; Mangani led for nil jof the journey in the Great Northern | Steeplechase; Young Thurnham com- : ploted the course in the Winter ' Steeplechase. but was a long way back, an additional month’s work probably | tuning him up. Kawini did not start I a t Ellerslie. In Big Hurdles It was thought, after last, year's results, that a penalty would be inflicted on t.lie winner of the Trentham Hurdles, j 1 2 miles, run on the opening day, in the
event of his being -engaged in the Winter Hurdles, miles, on the third j day, the weights for the latter race appearing with the first day's handicaps, but no provision has been ma.de for such a penalty. Last winter Overhaul (9.ti) easily defeated Mister Gamp (11.3) in the Trentham Hurdles, the margin being a length. In the. Winter Hurdles Mister Gamp, with an advantage of one pound in weight, again met with a length defeat at the hands of Overhaul. Auckland’s hopes in the Winter Hurdles are Archibald, Luminary, Mountain Guide, Prince Lu, Star Comet, Taumai (these are also in the Trentham Hurdles on opening day), Pompeius, Mangani, arid Wako King. On the flat, the Auckland representation is not so large, but with True Blood. Helium. Maori Boy and High Pitch in the middle distance races, and Marble King. Lady’s Boy, Prince of Orange, Paddon and Takutama in the sprints, a stake or two may come north. However, the hack hurdlers contain some promising sorts. The two hack Steeplechase events on thft programme are the only contests In which Auckland horses do not figure. The Handicaps On Huesday next the weights for the first, day and also for the Winter Hurdles (third day) are due to make , their appearance, and acceptances close I at 9 p.m. on Monday week, June 30. i The following is the list of Auckland I horses and the races they have been entered for at the Wellington meetFirst Day Vittoria Hurdles. 12 miles.—Carlaris, Daylight, Mountain Guide, Pompeius, and Wa 1*:o King.
