FIGHTING OIL FIRES

POWDER FOAM IS LATEST DEVICE PRECAUTIONS NEAR TANKS One of the latest developments in fire-fighting appliances used by oil companies is a powder which becomes foam when mixed with water. Formerly the foam, a soap mixture, was kept in bulk near the oil tanks. In powder form it is much less bulky and quite as effective. Mr. H. B, Lenon, engineer to the Vacuum Oil Proprietary, Limited, gave the above information on the Maunganui this morning on his arrival from Sydney. He will make a tour of the Dominion, inspecting the company’s oil depots. Mr. F. A. L. Maw, chief construction engineer to the company, also arrived on the Maunganui and will spend some time here before returning to the United States. Oil tanks are at present being erected by the company at a depot outside Wellington and also at Dunedin. Mr. Lenon will remain in New Zealand until January. He will then return to headquarters in Australia.
