Bells of Shandon Wins Rich Stake NURSERY AT RANDWICK

LIBERAL STARTING PRICE It is very many years since an Auckland two-year-old won a race at Randwick, and probably one would Have to go back to Mr. J. Marshall’s youngster Pearl Necklet, who scored there. However, last Saturday Bells of Shandon won the £SOO Nursery Handicap. It was at the end of March that Mr. P. S. Gleeson, of Auckland, sent Bells of Shandon to Sydney, in company with Mr. J. C. Gleeson’s two-year-old Oil King. These youngsters were placed in charge of the well-known Randwick trainer, F. McGrath, who has done so well of late years with Amounis. Nicely Treated On Saturday, Bells of Shandon was produced in the Second Nursery Handicap, six furlongs, and his weight was 7.9. As the Lord Quex youngster had won at Te Aroha early in March with 7.11, and was asked to carry 8.10 when he was beaten the second day, and a fortnight later dead-heated for second with 8.9 with Wild Time on the second day at Paeroa, it will be recognised that he was not harshly treated on Saturday, even allowing for the better company he was meeting. Bells of Shandon won by_ a head, and as the official result of the race was not cabled over, the other placegetters are unknown- Tho starting price was good, nothing shorter than sevens being obtainable when the market was in full swing. The totalisator dividend too was a surprise, being even better proportionately than the starting price. No less than 75 youngsters were nominated for this race, and included several high-class performers.

The success of Bells of Shandon was well received in Auckland, where his owner is a very popular supporter of the Turf.
