TARIFF BARRIERS
RETALIATION PROBABLE ; VIEWS IN CANADA ‘‘Personally I think that more should be done toward affecting mutual arrangements concerning tariffs between countries of the Empire, especially as other countries are erecting tariff barriers against the Empire.” This view was expressed last even- j ing by Mr. G. A. Troup, Mayor of ■Wellington, who returned by the Aorangi after a brief visit to Canada. He stated that during the few days he spent in Vancouver and Seattle he discussed the new Canadian tariffs with prominent business men. He paid special attention to the increase on New Zealand butter. Canadian people, he thought, were of the opinion that New Zealand would retaliate by increasing the duty on goods imported from Canada. He pointed out to merchants that the balance of trade at present was against New Zealand, and it was quite, possible that there would be a retaliation in timber duties.
