AWAPUNI NOTES
HORSES FOR HASTINGS mrs. McDonald’s half dozen Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON NORTH, Thurs. Although the Wellington'meeting will in all probability find a big contingent from Awapuni, this centre will be represented at Hastings and Hawera by small strings. Democratic, who was not himself at the winter meeting of the Hawera Club, is again being speeded up in his work and, in company with Poppy Day he was sent along over a round on the trial grass yesterday morning to run the last five furlongs in 1.12 2-5 on a heavy track, copious rain having fallen during the night. Democratic will contest the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles on the second day at Hastings, while Poppy Day claims an engagement in the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Egmont Hunt fixture. Arrowhead had Evening Hero as a partner in a six furlong gallop on the trial grass, the Arrowsmith gelding drawing clear in the run down the straight to complete his task in good style, the last half-mile being left behind in 54 2-ssec. Arrowhead ran two very fair races at Otaki. although he took a very erratic course in the straight on the second day. Unlike Arrowhead, Evening Hero does not appreciate heavy going. Red Bank, who made his debut in
an auspicious manner in the role of ’chaser at Wanganui, will have his next outing at the Hawke's Bay meeting, where he will contest the Hawke’s Bay Steeples. The All Red gelding negotiated a strong round yesterday prior to running home f»om the five furlong post in 1.11 4-5.
Birkbeck, who will also contest the Hawke’s Bay Steeples, had Corneroff as a companion over a couple of steady rounds. Birkbeck appears to have thrown off all effects of the injury which prevented his carrying through his Wanganui engagements. Corneroff has been accorded an entry for the Woodlands Steeplechase at Hastings, while the Danilof gelding also figures in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase field at the Egmont meeting. He promises to be a likely recruit to the game. A Strong Team Mrs. A. McDonald will have a team of half a dozen engaged at Hastings, for in addition to Birkbeck, Airforce and Corneroff in the jumping events. Potoaform. Lljm Du and Blacksmith figure in the flat events. Potoaform was required to carry big weights at Otaki and the Potoa gelding set the pace both days only to retire at the top of the straight. Llyn Du, who is, incidentally, to be put to the jumping branch, ran a very fair third in the principal event on the second day, while Blacksmith showed a good turn of speed in the maiden after being left. With a little more racing experience, the last named promises to develop into something above the ordinary. Blacksmith slipped over five furlongs yesterday morning in 1.9 —quite a creditable effort.
Winlock. who opened her winning account at the Blenheim fixture, will be taken through to Hastings, where the Paladin filly will contest the Kidnappers’ Flat Handicap in which Evening Hero also figures. Yesterday morning Winlock ran home from the five furlong post in 1.11 without being asked to give of her best. Her stable companion, First Ruler, who broke down while competing in the hurdle event on the second day at Otaki, has been sent home. Blue Paper slipped over the first two furlongs of a five furlong task yesterday in 25, but then eased up to complete the full journey in 1.9. Magic Land and Llyn Du were only required to fulfil pace work, although the pair came home from the five-fur-long post in 1.15. The former, who ran in the maiden events at Otaki, will transfer to the jumping game at Hawera, while Llyn Du will probably contest the Heretaunga Handicap at Hastings—the open sprint in which Moutoa Treasury is another local candidate. The last-named made a reappearance at Otaki, but was never well enough placed in the early stages of her races to threaten any real danger. On the second day, in company with four others, she was badly left —the one bad start of the fixture. General Callamart, the Callaghan—Martial Dawn gelding who is now in W. Bailey's charge, will be tried over the battens at Hawera, in which event Birkie, who has likewise passed into his care, will also figure. The latter is now getting well on in years. Four Aces, who disappointed his mentor In the hunters’ events at the recent Auckland meeting, will make his next appearance in the Hunt Cup Steeples at Egmont. The Warplane gelding was; restricted to an easy task in the centre of the course yesterday morning. Lady Lackham (Lackham —Lady Kotiripo), who was a runner in the Waikanae Scurry at Otaki on the second day, has been returned to her owner. While she has shown a good turn of speed over a short distance, she is somewhat on the small side. Mister Gamp Mister Gamp, who disappointed a strong army of stay-at-home backers at Ellerslie, was an absentee from the tracks yesterday morning, the Bronzetti gelding being treated to a day or two in the paddock. He is none the worse, for his falls and he will probably be found in action again at the Wellington meeting.
