ITALIAN INVASION

SUGAR WORKERS REASSURED IN QUEENSLAND FOREIGN EMBARGO REMAINS SYDNEY, Wednesday. The delicate situation on Queensland sugar plantations, where there is considerable friction between Australian and Italian morkers, was somewhat relieved today by a statement made by Mr. F. M. Forde, Acting Minister of Customs. He said there was no risk of Northern Queensland becoming Italianised, for at least 75 per cent, of the mill and field workers were British. There was no danger of the embargo on imported foreign sugar being lifted, said the Minister. The Federal Government’s policy was adequate protection for the local sugar industry, which would enable the white race to settle and develop Northern Queensland. Mr. Forde expressed the hope that the employers would give preference of employment in cane-cutting gangs to British workers.
