AUCKLAND TROTS

LARGE VISITORS’ LIST CANTERBURY'S STRONG HAND Judging by the large number of entries received by the Auckland Trotting Club for its winter carnival from owners and trainers in other parts of the Dominion, there will be a big “visitors’ list” at Alexandra Park on June 21 and 23. In this Island Manawatu, Taranaki, Hastings and Wellington is represented, while, as usual, the Canterbury contingent provides a strong hand. Trio From Longburn W. Hughes invariably meets with a good measure of success at Epsom during the winter campaign and he has entered three of the Mitchell livery carriers for the approaching fixture. The trotter Rangitero, who improved in stamina toward the latter portion of the season, will be at home in the square-gaited events, while there will, bo opportunities afforded the pacers Clang Awa' and High Sea. Both of these were winners at recent meetings and should be in good form for Auckland. Wearing Corrigan Colours Alex. Corrigan has become a regular patron of the Auckland winter carnival, and his team being prepared for this year’s activities comprises Queen Elizabeth. Richore, Hostess and Ngaliuia. The last-named is a solid sprinter, purchased by the Hawera sportsman from Mr. J. H. Lloyd after the New Plymouth fixture. The other members of the string have had a good deal of racing this year with varied success, but Richore was showing improved form in the autumn. Ashhurst Aspirants The Ashhurst trainer, Harry Garnett, has nominated three of his charges, Audo Spray. Great He light ind Hangihou freely for the function. Great Delight won a heat here last June and has not been successful since. He lost all form before the Auckland

Christmas meeting, and after a short let-up was in action again at Easter. If he strikes form, Great Delight will again be in the picture. Rangihou was secured by Garnett from Mr. J. H. Lloyd at New Plymouth for a nominal sum (should he win a race) and he is a pacer with possibilities. Audo Spray is a solid plodding trotter whose greatest asset is honesty. Tomky's Quartet Ever since the local club has been racing in June one of its staunchest supporters from the other Island has been W. J. Tomkinson, and he never failed to make the trip pay handsomely. This year “Tomky’s” team is not so strong numerically, but the quality appears to be “all wool.” The quartet consists of Wilma Dillon, Rey Logan, Country King and the Australian trotter Home Voyage, and judg* ing on their recent form the pacing contingent will be in excellent order to do battle for the Addington stable. Country King is an improving sort who may do well at Epsom. The “Big Chiefs’ ” Brigade The big chief this season in the lightharness world both in the driving and training sections is Ces Donald, who has a tremendous team under his care, but has met with a, line measure of success. The Belfast trainer appears to have horses to suit every class of competition, a handy position to be in. For tiie fixture at Alexandra Park lie lias the trotters Writer and Standby, while the pacing department will be represented by Carmel, Invader and Bessie Logan. With a strong hand of live, Donald should have rosy prospects of adding further to his list. Cardinal Logan’s Long Suit No horse that visits Auckland regularly for the winter carnival has a naore attractive record than Cardinal Logan, who has never yet failed to return a dividend at Epsom in June. He has won over both short and long journeys and fairly in the heavy going. Albert Hendricksen, his ownertrainer, has entered two more useful pacers for the meeting in Neeoro and Denver* City. Like Cardinal Logan, this pair has recently been in second place, which suggests the Southerners are in readiness for real business. Small But Good Roy Berry, who usually brings a fair-sized team to Auckland at any season of the year, has only two nominated on this occasion. One is the locally-owned Sunshower, which has raced consistently and successfully this year and reached the high circle. The other is Vecto, who went very close recently to being placed on the schooling list for misconduct at the barrier. The ban was not imposed and to show his appreciation of this act Vecto has since run two first and a second. Paying remunerative prices. While Berry’s team for Auckland may be small, it represents good form. Some Speedy Ones P. Holmes, who has had a fairly successful season, has several engaged at Epsom, including Laplander, Eugene de Oro and Cyone. These pacers have

all shown smartness in their racing essays and are a. speedy trio. Laplander is no stranger to these parts and has won at Alexandra Park, but the others have yet to make their bow to an Auckland audience. Eugene de Oro is more than useful and over a short course he is always a strong factor to be reckoned with. Linkman Strikinoi Form Other visitors which have been accorded an entry for the big carnival are King Oscar, Pluto. Mac de Oro, Nelson Boy, Dipnoi. Linkman. Dolores (Canterbury), Final McKinney (Oamaru), Ben Bingen (Hastings), Bello o’ Mine (Nelson). Native Star (Peilding). Of the foregoing. Linkman, who visited last year’s function and downed Wrackler over 10 furlongs, adapted himself particularly well to the heavy conditions. Recently the Match light gelding has signalled a return to form, in which case he should be on hand again when the numbers are hoisted.
