BUSES TO AVONDALE

WATER VIEW PEOPLE OBJECT TO FEEDER SYSTEM “SERVICE TOO SLOW” Residents of Waterview, Avondale, are dissatisfied with the feeder bus service provided by the Auckland Transport Board to connect with the Point Chevalier trams. Compaining to the Board, the ratepayers’ association said that the main objection was that it took four times as long to make the full journey from Avondale to the City and vice versa as a private company could do with through, up-to-date buses. “Residents of the outer suburbs consider that they are entitled to fast transport, and if the board cannot give this, we consider it only fair and British to hand over the service to the Auckland Bus Company, which can and will give the necessary fast and comfortable travelling,” the association declared. Reporting, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said that close supervision had been given to this service, which had run satisfactorily and in a general way had met with public appreciation. The Avondale district now had a more frequent service than heretofore and at a lower fare. It would not be in the interests of either the board or the ratepayers for the service to be handed over to a private operator. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, moved that the letter be received and a reply sent in terms of the manager's report. “It is the duty of the board to visit this district and experience what the residents are themselves experiencing,” said Mr. E. H. Potter. “If we cannot give them service we should hand it over to someone who can.” Mr. A. J. Entrican: But they are getting a service. Mr. M. J. Coyle: It seems to me we can do nothing right. When the manager has brought down a scheme (the reference was to tram's in Albert Street) which is going to give better and quicker service to the majority, a number of people take exception. Mr. J. Wood: I made it my business to visit the Point Chevalier hall corner and found that there was not the slightest hitch. Everything seemed to take place automatically.” “I have taken particular notice of this,” said Mr. L. E. Rhodes, “and I am sure these people cannot get a better and cheaper service.” Mr. Allum’s motion was carried.
