DAIRY OUTPUT INCREASE

GRADING FIGURES FOR 10 MONTHS BUTTER AND CHEESE From Our Resident Repoi'tcr WELLINGTON, Today. A total of 178,675 tons of dairy produce was graded in New Zealand during the lu months of the 1929-30 season, ending May 31. It comprised 93,611 tons of butter and 54.064 tons of cheese, showing increases of 17.64 per cent, and 0.31 per cent, respectively, compared with the corresponding period of the 1928-29 season. The figures of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture show that the salted butter graded for May, 1930, was 3,448 tons, and the unsalted 55 tons, a total of 3,503 tons, compared with 3,415 tons salted and two tons unsalted, a total of 3,417 tons, for May, 1929. This is an increase of 2.51 per cent. For the 10 months ended May, 1930, the respective quantities were:—Salted, 92,020 tons; unsalted, 1,591 tons. There was a total of 93,611 tons, compared with 77.452 tons and 2,165 tons, a total of 79,617 tons, for the corresponding period of the preceding season. This is an increase of 17.57 per cent. The cheese graded for May. 1930, comprised:—White, 3,222 tons; coloured, 2,052 tons. This is a total of 5.274 tons, compared with 3.400 tons of white and 1,789 tons of coloured, a total of 5,189 tons, for May, 1929, an increase of 1.63 per cent. The quantities for the 10 months ended May, 1930, were:—White, 56,094 tons; coloured. 28,239 tons. This is a total of 84,333 tons, compared with 57,540 tons of white and 26,524 tons of coloured, a total of 54.064 tons, for the corresponding period of the preceding season, an increase of 0.31 per cent. Converting these figures into butterfat equivalent, there is an increase of 9.77 per cent, in butter-fat production for the 10 months, as compared with the corresponding period of the 1928-29 season. Stocks held in the various grading ports as at May 31, 1930, were:—Butter, 11;437 tons; cheese, 13,381 tons. These compare with 6,385 tons of butter and 8.842 tons of cheese held on May 31, 1929.
