ENGLAND DEFEATED IN THE DAVIS CUP ROUND JAPAN BEATS SPAIN Reed. 10.50 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Australia defeated England by 4 matches to one in the Davis Cup. Hopman (Australia) beat Lee, 6—3. 4—6, 6—3, 6—4. Crawford (Australia) beat Gregory. 6—2, 7—5, 6—B, 6—3. Australia next will meet Italy in the semi-finals of the European zone. Hopman made a splendid recovery to win the last two sets, and thus clinch the tie for Australia. In a good match Crawford outplaj’ed Gregory. At Barcelona in the Davis Cup Harada (Japan) beat Juanico (Spain), 6—o, 6—3, 6—3. Japan is now to meet Czecho-Slo-vakia in the semi-finals. A message from Brussels says in the Belgian championships final Borotra beat Cochet in five sets.
