The Care of the Car SHIFTING STUBBORN HOSE CONNECTIONS Insert a thin blade of a knife between the flexible hose and water pipe, gently easing it ail the way round; then squirt a little petrol around the joint and twist. If the rubber is smooth and slippery, grip it with a piece of emery paper; by this means a firm grip is afforded and a stubborn hose connection can readily be shifted. STROMBERG CARBURETTER ADJUSTMENT Have you ever had a Stromberg carburetter, model T or TX, that persisted in leaking in spite of changing the float level and replacing the float needle and seat? When this happens turn it over and take out the main jet plug (there are onl two, idle tube plug and main jet plug; then, with a twist of your screwdriver, tighten the loose main jet and the leak will stop. This is really only a temporary repair. In order to make a permanent repair, the main jet should be tightened and then a coil spring and special main jet plug installed under it. These parts can be secured. —“E.T.” REMOVING OLD PAINT You can remove the old paint with the following mixture:-—Dissolve one rounded tablespoonful of cornstarch in two quarts of cold water. Allow mixture to cool. Apply all over painted and enamelled surfaces (not wheels) with rubber bath sponge, as heavily as surface will hold. After two hours, hose off thoroughly. Repeat process on any spots remaining. Enamel will be thoroughly cleaned, not removed. If body is aluminium, wash mixture off almost immediately, or lye will damage.
