Winter Trotting

AUCKLAND’S BIG CARNIVAL The Last of the Season TRAINING AT EPSOM AND OTAHUHU DESPITE the continued unsatisfactory weather last week the Alexandra Park caretaker, A. Ronnie, gave the training tracks strict and careful attention with the result trainers were able during the week-end to get in serviceable work. The footing was not conducive to speed, but solid tasks were undertaken by a number of candidates claiming engagements at the Auckland winter fixture.

All In Order Xj. McMahon s team bears a healthy appearance and the respective aspirants for June honours are hitting out in their track essays. Gold Jacket in particular is putting plenty of devil into his work and free legged is showing up splendidly. Torpedo Huon is still a trifle concerned when the going is holding, otherwise he is O.K. The Matchlight mare Mignonne is shaping pleasingly in her latest efforts. In Good Heart Iso fault can be found with W. Clifton’s pair. The Abbey and Explosion, and the latter tackles his stable mate in their track bouts with rare relish. The two chestnuts will be in great heart for their forthcoming engagements. and will give a good account of themselves. In bis several last outings under silk, The Abbey has left the mark in approved style. Striking Form Again A. Julian has three in steady work for the Auckland carnival and if the weather takes a favourable turn it is more than likely Belle Ax worthy will again be sheltered at Green Lane with Gold Treasure, Rose Bingen and Xelson Girl. Rose Bingen is putting plenty of dash into her work and should be at her best to tackle the pacers in the Adams Gold Cup. Xelson Girl is trotting more solidly, while Gold Treasure is bowling along again in his best style. A Useful Quartet Among the square-gaited section doing their daily dozen at Epsom nothing appears to be hitting out with more determination than Roma Bingen. W. Xightingale has the mare in fine fettle, and she is going “all square” in her exercise. Xelson Tasker and Evelyn Locanda are also in the best of condition and pacing with their customary dash and freedom. Evelyn Locanda should be cherry ripe to tackle the select circle in the big two-mile heats at the Pqrk. The other member of the string, Chrystal, is proving himself a useful paeer with the sting out of the ground. Classy Young Trotters C. G. Lee is mainly engaged at present with his two promising young trotters, one of which, Parrish Belle, with three wins to her credit in as many starts, will have her first race at Epsom this month. The filly is not being set any serious tasks but she can handle the soft going all right. The two-year-old colt, full brother to Jean McElwyn, is continuing to please track watchers and he should turn out A 1 when put to the racing game. Xelson Billon is getting through liis work in good shape but his duties so far are on the light side. The Old General—All Bell W. Cockbill is showing plenty of patience with Birect Morning, who, since the sting left the ground, has felt more at home in his allotments. The speedy ex-Australian gives every indication of again seeing the starting barrier. Old All Bell is as young as ever when it comes to real business on the holding circuit, and when the eventful day rolls round the Gold Bell gelding may give his opponents a big surprise. Rosie Thorpe is doing all that is required of her in good style. Ready for His Job The sturdy roan horse Ban Direct is a regular attendant at Epsom under the supervision of Alby Patten, but no exacting tasks are being asked of the son of Wellington Birect. His trainer has him in splendid health and readv for the few bouts that will fit him for the racing he will be allotted at the Auckland fixture. Well Conditioned Lot J. Shaw lost no time in taking over control of Warplane, Great Change and Arachne, who are all in good spirits. Warplane is bright and perky and appears to have benefited by the racing he experienced in the autumn. Great Change is again trotting in his best style, and followers of work at Epsom know just how he can trot, too, when right. Arachne is not being hustled, ls well forward. Stoney, another of Mrs. Sweetapple’s team, is on deck agam under Trainer Tenke, who is also attending to the education of a couple of juveniles. Preparing for Action Mountain Bell is hitting out with her early season’s dash and determination and A. Mitchell’s fine daughtei of Slue Mountain King promises to be m readiness for any opposition on June 21 and _3. Others being prepared singly and making encouraging progress are Woodvale (J. O’Kane), Goldman (H. Medley), Golden Huia (A. Lovegrove), Birect Action (F. Gilchrist), Benefice (K. Morrison), Relianee (Bert Dyer), Anseline (J. Gee) Bncleßert <w - Ker T Tradesman (e! bandell) and D'Artagnan (G. Webb). GRASS TRACK AT OTAHUHU At Otahuhu, Caretaker J. Somers has the grass circuit in trim for trainers at that locality and full advantage is being taken of the opportunity offering to get a try- ? weck on the turf. WJth the dead footing consequent on the heavy rain, watches are not much in demand, but after all ,s the solid work that tells when the tight is in progress. Likes Winter Season Sebisca is rolling into his work with great gusto and the old trotter appears to have taken a new lease of life G Mitchell’s gelding appreciates the winter conditions and he will keep interln . , the unhoppled heats. „ Lady Yvonne in nf Th *? SO “ tracks ‘he daughter handful 6 appears to be a regular A Useful Pair S. Groat has Realty in great heart and the Cambridge winner is worS ln a st}..e that demonstrates he is ready to repeat the performance when the opportunity arises. That good soft-ot-fm trotter Floraline is back with the Otahuhu trainer and the Florizel geldftJfL hears a well-seasoned appeart nd ? wncr Carley has not alias traced 1 =° r‘ ve m ldi< ' ness since he last raced. S. Groat will add the finishing touches for the forthcoming mtetWould Prefer the Summer <- T . hcr , e is nothing wrong with Gold ‘fi’VFTflgn, and Jom Roe has the sqn o£ Gold Bell ready for the winter fray. It is doubtful whether this improved square-gaiter will appreciate the tracks

obtainable at this season of the year as lie does best when right on top ©j the ground. The same trainer has a promising novice trotter. Prince Tri. umph, by The Triumph—Liberty Bell* in hand that may be given a chance to air his ability in public very soon. Jewel Pointer in Fine Heart S. August visits the Otahuhu track fairly regularly and his charges. Jew*: Pointer, Stanmoor and Lord Nepean are doing useful toil. Lord Nepean’ appears to be a doubtful proposition although August has a knack of getting some of those that give the impression of having passed their hey day of usefulness back to top gear again Stanmoor is well but not getting much hopple work, while Jewel Pointer is revelling in his tasks and should b« in fine fettle for the fixture Worth Keeping in View T. Grimmond has Some Dillon bowling along in approved style and the Peter Moko gelding is pacing much truer than was his custom earlier in the season. Me is a speedy customer and if he races solidly with the colours up he will prove a dangerous opponent over any distance he tackles. Master Huia is also doing fine work for the same trainer, who has an addition to his string in the Our Thorpe mare Judy Thorpe. Gay Deceiver Doing Well George Paton is quite pleased with the manner in which The Tarter is standing up to his work and he has good reason to be Jubilant, as the son of Wildwood Junior is infusing plenty of dash and devil into his essays. George knows how to get the gay deceiver up to concert pitch, and with a good dispatch The Tarter will be prominent in his races. Paton has an occasional drive behind Hohoro. who is working in his customary fashion. Some Promising Juveniles Miss Nancy Edwards is handling an attractive two-year-old by Worthy Bond, from Agnes Chief, dam of Akenehi, which claims an engagement in next season’s Derby. The grey, who takes after his dam in respect to colour, is a nice even pacer and when thoroughly seasoned and experienced should turn out all right. Miss Edwards also has a young Triumph which is attracting a lot of attention at Otahuhu. FIRST DAY’S HANDICAPS Press Associa lion CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
