PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD
The Papakura Town F.oard met on Monday evening. Mr. Jas. McCall presided. The chairman. Mr. Jas. McCall, was appointed a delegate to attend a mee: - ing of local authorities contributing the maintenance of the Auckland War Memorial and Institute, to discus? a proposal by the institute to floodlight the building. Messrs. Leitch and Weir were appointed to attend a conference of local bodies called by the Auckland Hospital Board for June 10 to discuss the question of unemployed relief. The sum of €2 2s was donated to the Great South Road Beautifying Council. It was decided to support the Papa - toetoe Town Board’s proposal to introduce the ward system of representation on the Electric Power Board. A recommendation of the Finance Committee that the sum of £2O be refunded to the Papakura Beautifying Society for work dor.e at the cemetery was adopted. The Anzac Day collection amounting to €ll 5s 5d is also io be handed over to the society. Authority was given for a street light to be placed at the corner of Duke Street and Union Street. A recommendation from the Works Committee that the petrol tax be increased and representations made t<» the Government was strongly opposed by the Rev. W. C. Wood, who pointed out that the board received tio benefit from the present petrol tax by reason of the fact that its portion of Great South Road had been permanently reconstructed prior to this form of tavation. The recommendation was rejected by five votes to two.
