WHANGAREI NOTES
Despite the unpleasant -weather conditions on Thursday evening, there was a good attendance at the fete organised by the Whangarei High School Old Pupils’ Association for the purpose of raising funds toward the erection of memorial gates at the school. Novel side-shows and a popular dance room attracted many people. Those in charge of lie event had made excellent arrangements, and were rewarded with a profit amounting to about £25. Mr. H. C. Hemphill, county clerk. Whangarei, has been appointed first clerk of the North Auckland Counties Association. In return for the courtesies and hospitality accorded the Waitemata County Council on Its tour of North Auckland, the chairman, Mr. W. A. Bishop, tendered a complimentary dinner at the Settlers’ Hotel- Over 20 representatives of Northern local bodies were present. The boisterous weather has mad*) the fish swim deep this week, and there is a scarcity in Whangarei. The Ariel, an auxiliary boat- owned by Mr. Jack Glucina, experienced a severe buffeting by wind and seas in a llhour trip from Whananaki. Waves were running at a great height pear the entrance to the Whangarei Harbour.
At j-esterday’s conference of North Auckland Counties’ delegates a remit was passed that Section 77 of “The Local Bodies Loans Act” be amended in the direction of compelling the Crown to submit demands for interest due to the local authority in order that it may be paid on due date and the imposition of 5 per cent, penally obviated. It was pointed out that tbe present method was to throw the onus of payment on the due date on the clerk of the council, and the question was apt to be overlooked. Further, a remit requiring that “Tl.a Counties Act, 1920,” be amended to enable farmers to have more voice in elections and loan proposals, was submitted to the conference. It was suggested that up to £SOO valuation there should be one vote; for the next £SOO one additional vote, and one for each additional £I,OOO valuation. An amendment that the voting basis be up to £SOO one vote, for the next £SOO one additional vote, and one additional vote up to £3,000, also one additional vote for over £3,000, with a limit of four votes, was carried.
