SINGLES IN DAVIS CUP GO TO AUSTRALIANS GREGORY OVERWHELMED Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Friday. In the Davis Cup third round play, Crawford (Australia) defeated Lee (England), 3 —-6, 6 —2, 4-—6, 6 —2, 6—2. Hopman (Australia) defeated Gregory, S—6, 6 —4, 9 —7.
• Crawford and Lee both played a base-line game, and when the sets were 2—l against him, Crawford adopted the cutting and slicing tactics, and won the last two sets easily. Hopman caused surprise by beating the hard-hitting Gregory. He peppered the latter’s weak backhand. The Englishman also was unable to handle Hopman’s cannon-ball service.
