WICKETS TO SPARE
SLOW FINISH TO GAME WITH MIDDLESEX WIN FOR AUSTRALIANS United Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. The cricket match Australia v. Middlesex was continued this morning, the county players resuming their second innings. The weather was hot and the wicket bare, but appeared to be true. Walker was injured and Richardson kept wicket. Australia won by five wickets. The sixth wicket partnership of 101 by Hendren and Enthoven forced Australia to bat a second time, and five of the visitors’ wickets fell for 85. Hendren, passing Duleepsinhji’s 92, became the highest scorer against the Australians, and went on to compile r.he century in 165 minutes. Hitting 12 fours, Enthoven played very quietly until Richardson smartlycaught him behind the wicket. Richardson, who was unexpectedly successful as keeper, also dismissed Hendren. The score was then 271, the highest against the tourists to date.
The remaining wickets fell quickly. The Australians went in and Ponsford scored ten briskly, and then lost his middle stump. Bradman and Jackson moved along nicely until the formed jumped out and his wicket was shattered. THREE OUT FOR 59 Jackson was also badly beaten and three men were out for 59. McCabe and Richardson also went soon after reaching double figures. Then Kippax, who is suffering a strained groin, and Fairfax gathered the necessary runs for a victory.
