REDUCING

FOUR INCHES IN THREE WEEKS MOVIE STAR COLLAPSES Rarely if ever has fashion demanded such a heayy toll of women as at present. After years of figure neglect, with the straight up and down frock as chief aider and abettor, they are asked all of a sudden to develop an hour-glass silhouette. And there is no escape. The tight-fitting, highwaisted frock, with Its frank revelation of curves, is obviously no fad of the moment. Cables last week told of the grist this revolution is bringing to the mill of overseas gymnastic teachers, who

are being beseeehed on all sides to conjure up slender waists out of the blue, as it were. And now from Hollywood comes news of a reducing and beautifying wave that is sweeping through the little movie colony. So rigorous is the treatment some of the stars are undergoing that Marie Prevost, first of the devotees, has collapsed under the strain and is in hospital. Little wonder when one learns that a village masseuse guarantees to reduce the hips four inches in three weeks, provided the “victim” is prepared to make the necessary sacrifice! Not since the IS-day diet had Hollywood in its grip has there been such a radical wave of figure reduction.

BRASSIERE NOVELTY How to keep the tell-tale brassiere in its place is one of the problems facing the woman who chooses a frock with an extremely low-cut back. A famous French designer has forestalled this difficulty by originating the idea of a long strass buckle, which fastens the brassiere and at the same time spans the low decolletage of the frock. Another novelty is a strass clasp designed to attach the back of the frock to the chemise, so that the latter will not work its way up ana spoil the decollete effect.
